Stage 5 - Turtle Rock

"It is not the mountain we conquer but ourselves" by Sir Edmund Hillary

About this excursion

This expedition takes students on an exciting climb 470m above sea level to the top of Turtle Rock, a 180 million year old volcanic intrusion.

Students will conduct a field study to analyse the biotic and abiotic components of the local environment, to compare the natural and human impacted environments and become aware of the relationships which exist in the area.

Excursion activities

Students arrive at Wambangalang for a last chance water bottle top up and loo stop.

With the Wambangalang teachers leading the way, students continue on the bus to the base of Turtle Rock where they discuss the landforms and complete an overall survey of the site.

Your students hike to the dam to complete abiotic testing and a biodiversity assessment noting:

  • Air temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction (Kestrel)
  • Light intensity (Lux meter)
  • Water temperature and salinity (TDS meter)
  • Turbidity (tube)

Your students continue with their hike and testing of site 2 "the creek" and site 3 "the gully".

During the day your students will discuss weeds and introduced species, causes and impact of erosion and the impact of salinity on land and water quality.
