Stage 4 - Nocturnal Journal - Overnight Camp

"I often think that the night is more alive and more richly coloured than the day" - Vincent Van Gogh

About this excursion

This twilight program encourages students to relate the adaptation of nocturnal animals to their ability to survive in different environments.

Different trapping techniques are used to investigate and identify the creatures that call Wambangalang home after dark.

Focus:

The purpose of this two-day twilight camp is to encourage students to relate the adaptation of nocturnal animals to their ability to survive in different environments. Different trapping techniques are used to investigate and identify the creatures that call Wambangalang home after dark. Students will use their knowledge and understanding of nocturnal creatures to collect data, solve puzzles and present their findings

Excursion activities

Your students will arrive at Wambangalang in the early afternoon and settle into site. Your students are given their nature journals and introduced to the trapping techniques needed.

Students walk through the woodland with their nature journal and learn about different nocturnal animals in the area. They set up all the traps used for their investigation presentation.

In the classroom we will learn all about different nocturnal animals and their amazing adaptations. We will be able to see up close examples of real live animals.

Students will go on a guided night-time walk through the woodlands with spotlights and night vision cameras to locate and document the creatures living in the ponds and woodlands.

Students will return to the traps set the day before and collect the data they need for their investigation presentation

Data will be recorded and shared in this session and students will discuss the focus of their group's investigation presentation.

Students will develop a video presentation analysing and communicating the data collected during the investigation. The presentations will be uploaded, played and discussed in the classroom.

Students will have the opportunity to review the work of others and provide them with feedback.
